The number and type of VPN ports utilized depends on the protocol used. For example, the PPTP protocol uses TCP port number 1723 to create a connection to IP port 47 Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) for packet encapsulation.

I have L2TP and SSTP with softether but they are blocked too since they blocked these generic VPN connections. I wonder how some are providing fast PPTP connections there. let me know if you found a wy to change the GRE or TCP port thanx – user279563 Apr 16 '15 at 4:38 May 20, 2003 · Figure 2 : Linksys BEFSR41 VPN Port forwarding PPTP also needs IP protocol 47 (Generic Routing Encapsulation) for the VPN data traffic itself, but note that this is a required protocol , not a port. Ports used through the VPN tunnel: TCP 18231 - Policy Server login (will be encrypted, if SecureClient IP address is not in the VPN Domain) UDP 18233 - SCV update. UDP 18234 - Tunnel Test . Note: Endpoint Connect client, by default, will use port 443 to negotiate the tunnel, even if Visitor Mode is not selected. Then, if a VPN is using non-standard traffic on port 443, you could block everything on port 443 that doesn't meet the TLS standards. That won't break HTTPS, but may affect other non-standard services, requiring exceptions for their IP addresses. if it's ok to create vpn on layer 3 (one more hop between subnets) - go for tun. if you need to bridge two ethernet segments in two different locations - then use tap. in such setup you can have computers in the same ip subnet (eg 10.0.0.0/24) on both ends of vpn, and they'll be able to 'talk' to each other directly without any changes in their routing tables. vpn will act like ethernet switch

To enable VPN tunnels between individual host computers or entire networks that have a firewall between them, you must open the following ports: PPTP. To allow PPTP tunnel maintenance traffic, open TCP 1723. To allow PPTP tunneled data to pass through router, open Protocol ID 47. L2TP over IPSec. To allow Internet Key Exchange (IKE), open UDP 500.
